Do Sports Camps Need Insurance?

Monday, November 18, 2019 Sports camp

If you’re looking to build a sports camp or already have one, you have a lot to focus on. Equipment, staff, advertising, commercial property insurance, and more are all important factors to get just right. It can be easy to overlook one of the most important parts of your camp: insurance.

What Does Sports Camps Insurance Cover?

Sports camps insurance is geared to cover your camp from unexpected injury, damage, and legal claims. It generally includes these coverages:

  • General liability
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment
  • Accidental Medical Expense
  • Fire Damage

There is optional coverage as well, including:

  • Sexual Abuse and Molestation: This coverage is especially important if your sports camps’ participants are children or the elderly. It covers a certain amount of legal cost that arise from an accusation of sexual abuse or molestation.
  • Non-Owned Automobile: If you have employees using their vehicles or rented vehicles to work, such as coaches transporting equipment, you may need non-owned automobile coverage. This insurance helps cover bodily injury and property damage in case of an accident.
  • Miscellaneous Property Floater: Miscellaneous property floater coverage helps cover damage or loss that occurs to property that doesn’t remain on the original property. Sports equipment such as soccer nets qualify for this coverage.
  • Employment Practices: This optional liability coverage protects your business against lawsuits from employees. It may cover legal costs for claims made over employment issues such as discrimination and harassment.

Who Needs Sports Camp Insurance?

Anyone running a sports camp for a qualifying sport is eligible for sports camp insurance. Eligible sports include archery, band, baseball, basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, running, kick ball, ice skating, swimming and more. Exclusions include bungee jumping, haunted houses, rock climbing, and paint ball. There are some exceptions to the allowed list, as well. Make sure your sport is eligible for sports camp insurance with your insurer.

Who Does Sports Camp Insurance Cover?

Participants must be covered beneath sports camp insurance, but you can also choose to cover some or all your employees. This includes:

  • Managers
  • Coaches
  • Volunteers
  • Trainers/scorekeepers/bat boys

Speak with your agent about who you want covered under your policy. Most employees can be insured, but only the campers are required to be insured with sports camp insurance. This is not the same as workers compensation and isn’t covered beneath a business owner’s policy.

What Do I Need to Purchase Sports Camp Insurance?

Information about your sports camp is crucial when purchasing sports camp insurance. When applying for sports camp insurance, make sure you know the approximate number of participants and employees, location of the camp, and the same personal and financial information you have used for any other insurance.

Is Sports Camp Insurance Required?

Most states require not only a license to run a camp, but also liability insurance. Although this may be the only type of insurance your state requires, it’s important to consider all possibilities and find the policy that matches you and your camp’s needs.

How are Sports Camps Insurance Premiums Calculated?

There are several different factors considered when calculating the cost of sports camp insurance.

  • The type of camp and the risk: Sports considered more dangerous than others may cost more to insure.
  • The number of participants: The more people insured, the higher the premium cost.
  • History of past claims: If you have more claims against your camp, your cost may be higher than if you have less.
