What Does Sports Camp Insurance Cover?

Monday, June 8, 2020 Sports clinic insurance

Sports camps are fun and informative, offering a wonderful atmosphere for participants to play their favorite sports and make new friends. But not everything can be predicted, and accidents happen in frequently in sports. Sports injuries can be serious, so it’s crucial that every sports camp has the right amount of coverage.

There are three main areas of coverage that sports insurance includes: general liability, accident insurance and directors and officers insurance.

General Liability

General liability insurance is basic coverage that every organization or business should invest in. This insurance provides compensation for injuries, property damage and personal or advertising damage that occurs as a result of typical camp activity. If your sports camp includes basketball and a participant slips and twists their ankle on the basketball court, for example, general liability insurance can step in to help with medical expenses and possible legal fees, should the participant choose to sue the club.

This is not the same as professional liability insurance. Professional liability insurance covers professional negligent acts while general liability covers non-professional negligent acts. If an accident occurs as a direct result of a camp member’s advice or instruction, you will need professional liability insurance to compensate for it.

Accident Insurance

Perhaps the most important type of insurance for sports clinics is accident insurance. Accident insurance ranges in coverages from basic injuries to severe injuries and even death benefits, in the unfortunate circumstance that a participant passes away while participating in the sports camp.

Accident insurance can cover injuries from fly balls, bodily collision, concussions and more. Participants and the parents of young participants want to know that they will be safe participating in your sports clinic. Having a quality accident insurance policy can make sure anyone injured will receive compensation for necessary medical bills. This coverage may cover emergency costs, basic medical bills, rehabilitation and disability benefits, and death benefits to surviving family members.

Directors and Officers Insurance

If your sports camp has a director’s board, you will likely need directors and officers insurance (D&O insurance). This insurance covers claims that are filed against a director or officer based on activity they participate in while on the board. Accusations that may be covered by D&O insurance includes:

  • Fraud or misuse of funds
  • Misrepresentation
  • Intellectual property theft
  • Breach of fiduciary duty
  • Failing to comply with board regulations

Even if your sports camp is non-profit, you may consider D&O insurance. Any funds that do come in should be protected from loss. Although you vet your staff responsibly, it’s not possible to predict everything that may hurt your sports clinic. That’s why it’s best to prepare for the worst, just in case.

Who is Sports Insurance for in a Sports Camp?

Sports insurance is designed to cover anyone involved in the sports camp. This includes:

  • Participants
  • Coaches and managers
  • Volunteers
  • Umpires and referees
  • Scorekeepers, ball boys and other hired or volunteered help

Injuries, accidents, theft and more can threaten a sports camp and its participants. Thankfully, you can purchase sports insurance to prepare for these dangers. Limits and prices on this insurance should depend on the size and scope of your sports camp. Larger camps with a lot of participants will need more coverage than smaller camps, thus costing more in insurance premiums. The type of activities your sports camp participates in may also affect your sports insurance needs. Activities that are considered higher risk, such as football and gymnastics, may need higher accident coverage to make up for the risk. If you have any doubts or questions about your sports camp’s coverage, make sure to speak with an insurance agent.
