Accident Coverages for High School Athletes
Accident insurance helps financially protect high schools and their student-athletes. It may help pay for medical expenses that arise from accidents while students participate in school-sponsored activities. Whether you are part of a public school, a private school or a charter school, your insurance coverage can be tailored to meet your needs. Several different options are available, including:

Blanket mandatory accident coverage
Blanket mandatory accident insurance may protect a high school’s students while they participate in school-sanctioned activities. This coverage includes athletics and non-sport activities like speech, debate or drama. This policy may provide medical expenses if a student is injured while participating in these extracurricular activities. Specific rosters are generally not needed for this protection, and it typically functions as excess insurance, meaning individuals will receive benefits after their personal insurance provides coverage. Additionally, if the individual does not have health insurance, this coverage may function as primary insurance.

K-12 voluntary student accident insurance
K-12 voluntary student accident insurance is made available through the school for parents or students’ guardians to purchase. It is an excess insurance that helps pay for medical bills if a student is hurt while participating in a school-sanctioned event. Two options are typically available:

Full-time, 24-hour coverage provides continuous benefits throughout the year even when school is not in session (e.g., weekends, spring break, summer) and before or after school.

School time or “at-school” coverage provides benefits for injuries sustained when school is in session and when students are participating in school-sanctioned activities. All scholastic activities other than senior high football may be covered by this policy and coverage for senior high football is typically available with a separate premium charge.

Catastrophic accident insurance
Catastrophic accident insurance may provide coverage if a student-athlete suffers a severe injury while participating in a school-sponsored event. This insurance typically functions as an excess policy that works in conjunction with a base accident policy, and it and may have relatively high deductibles and limits. It may provide payments for medical expenses and the cost of continued health care in accordance with the policy.
